Two Trailblazing KKU Researchers Earn Top Honors for “2024 High-Potential Researcher Award” for Groundbreaking Projects

In a significant recognition of academic excellence, two researchers from Khon Kaen University were honored with the “High-Potential Researcher Award 2024,” highlighting their contributions to cutting-edge research that addresses critical national and global challenges. The award ceremony, organized by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research, and Innovation (MHESI), in partnership with the National Research Council of Thailand (NRCT) and the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA), took place on August 26, 2024, at the Bangkok Convention Center, Central World.

The event was a platform for intellectual exchange, with researchers presenting groundbreaking studies aimed at solving pressing issues. Three researchers were recognized for their outstanding work, with two of them hailing from Khon Kaen University.
Prof. Dr. Wanchai Maleewong, from KKU’s Faculty of Medicine, received the award for his research titled “New Knowledge Creation on Emerging and Re-Emerging Infectious Diseases, Neglected Tropical Diseases, and Vector-Borne Diseases through Integrated Research for Innovation Development.” His project focuses on advancing research into infectious diseases, particularly in tropical regions, to develop more effective diagnostic tools, treatments, and prevention methods. The work is poised to revolutionize healthcare, leading to new commercial applications and sustainable human resource development for Thailand.

Prof. Dr. Alissara Reungsang, also from KKU, representing the Faculty of Technology, was honored for her project on “Biofuel and Biochemical Production Technologies from Biomass and Industrial Waste in the Sugarcane Industry.” Her research is pioneering efforts in the bioeconomy by developing two main platforms: bioenergy, which includes hydrogen and methane production, and biochemical production of high-value chemicals like fatty acids and biopolymers. This project has drawn support from industrial giants like Mitr Phol Sugarcane Research and Development Co., Ltd., ensuring that her findings will be implemented for real-world impact.

Adding to the lineup, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Uraiwan Arunyawat from Kasetsart University represented Prof. Dr. Theeraphap Chareonviriyaphap, delivering insights into the research on “Simian Malaria in Humans: Mosquito Vectors, Long-Tailed Macaques, and Predictive Risk Mapping of Emerging Diseases in Thailand.” This research is vital in understanding the transmission dynamics of malaria between humans and animals, contributing to the fight against infectious diseases in the region.
The award recipients’ work is expected to have wide-reaching impacts across academic, economic, and policy sectors, offering innovative solutions to urgent issues. Their projects align with Thailand’s Strategy 4, which focuses on developing human resources and institutions in science, research, and innovation as the foundation for driving economic and social progress. By leveraging scientific advancements, these researchers are paving the way for sustainable development and global competitiveness.
