On August 30, 2024, Khon Kaen University’s Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, in collaboration with local religious networks and the Department of Religious Affairs under the Ministry of Culture, launched an impactful initiative aimed at fostering understanding and peaceful coexistence in Thailand’s multicultural society.
The academic seminar, titled “Multicultural Tour in Northeastern Thailand: Interfaith Relations for Peacebuilding and Development,” attracted over 100 participants, including students, academics, religious leaders, and members of the public. The event took place at the Faculty’s Meeting Room 2 in Building HS05.
Dr. Chanawit Anusuren, Deputy Dean for Strategic Planning and Quality Assurance, delivered the welcome address, setting a tone of unity and collaboration. Chief Petty Officer First Class Nawee Saengrit, Acting Director of the Khon Kaen Provincial Cultural Office, officially opened the event, emphasizing the importance of interfaith dialogue in today’s society.
Dr. Imron Sohsan, Chair of the Bachelor of Public Administration Program and the seminar’s lead organizer, highlighted the significance of the event. “This initiative, supported by the Department of Religious Affairs and in partnership with the Wasatiyyah Institute for Peace and Development, represents a crucial step towards reducing extremism and fostering understanding across different faiths. Today’s activities are designed to deepen our knowledge and appreciation of religious diversity, which is essential for peaceful coexistence in Thailand’s multicultural society,” Dr. Imron explained.
A highlight of the event was a keynote address by Assist. Prof. Dr. Abdulloh Numsuk, Director of the Wasatiyyah Institute for Peace and Development. His speech, titled “Multiculturalism and Peacebuilding and Development in Thailand,” resonated with attendees, offering insights into how diversity can serve as a foundation for sustainable development.
Following the keynote, a panel discussion on “The Role of Religion in Peacebuilding and Sustainable Development in a Changing World” provided a platform for participants to engage in meaningful dialogue. The exchange of ideas not only fostered interfaith understanding but also underscored the shared responsibility of different religious communities in building a peaceful and sustainable future for Thailand.
The Multicultural Tour in Northeastern Thailand initiative is poised to make a lasting impact by promoting harmony and mutual respect among Thailand’s diverse religious communities. Through such efforts, Khon Kaen University and its partners are paving the way for a more peaceful and inclusive society.
