Khon Kaen University recently honored its top researchers with the 2023 Outstanding Researchers and Sarasin Honor Awards, underscoring the university’s commitment to advancing research excellence. The award ceremony took place on August 21, 2024, at the Avani Khon Kaen Hotel & Convention Centre, attracting over 250 attendees, including awardees, their families, and university executives.
In her opening remarks, Prof. Dr. Pewpan Maleewong, Assistant to the President for Research and Graduate Studies, highlighted the significance of these awards in recognizing the invaluable contributions of KKU’s faculty and researchers. “These awards are a testament to the outstanding research produced by our scholars, research that has not only enhanced KKU’s global reputation but also contributed meaningfully to the advancement of knowledge and the betterment of society,” she said.
The ceremony marked the 12th year of this prestigious event, where 43 researchers re honored across various categories. This year, two researchers received the distinguished Sarasin Honor Award, nine were recognized with Diamond Outstanding Researcher Awards, eight with Gold Outstanding Researcher Awards, and 24 with Silver Outstanding Researcher Awards.
KKU President, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Charnchai Panthongviriyakul, in his keynote address, emphasized the critical role of research in driving societal progress and national development. “Our researchers’ work positions KKU as a leading global institution, and their dedication not only elevates our university but also significantly impacts the quality of life in the Isan region and beyond,” he noted.
Among the honorees, Prof. Dr. Ekabhan Swatsitang from the Department of Physics, Faculty of Sciences, who received the Sarasin Honor Award, expressed his profound gratitude. “This award is the highest honor for a researcher at KKU, and it inspires me to continue my work with even greater dedication, knowing it contributes to the nation’s development,” he said. He credited his success to the support of his students, research team, colleagues, and the university, which has provided crucial funding and resources.
Prof. Dr. Sujin Bureerat from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, also a recipient of the Sarasin Honor Award, shared his pride in contributing to KKU’s research achievements. “This recognition confirms our role in advancing the university’s research agenda and training specialists who will drive long-term societal development,” he remarked. He encouraged young researchers to pursue their passions with persistence, integrating their research with teaching and community service to create a cohesive academic environment.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Chavis Ketkaew, Associate Dean for Strategy, Research, and International Affairs at KKU International College, who received the Diamond Outstanding Researcher Award, expressed his appreciation for the collaborative efforts that led to this recognition. “I am deeply thankful to my family, colleagues, and research team for their support, which has been instrumental in achieving this honor,” he said. Dr. Chavis also emphasized the importance of building networks and staying attuned to global trends to ensure that research remains relevant and impactful.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pornthep Thanonkaew from the Department of Production System Technology and Industrial Management, Faculty of Technology, a Gold Outstanding Researcher Award recipient, reflected on the dedication required to maintain high research standards. “Continuous effort, even amid other responsibilities, is key to achieving research excellence,” he advised. He urged new researchers to seek collaborations and view challenges as opportunities for growth.
Assist. Prof. Dr. Ploypailin Kijkasiwat from the Department of Finance, Faculty of Business Administration and Accountancy, who received the Silver Outstanding Researcher Award, highlighted the importance of perseverance in research. “Consistency in our daily efforts, no matter how small, is crucial,” she stated. She encouraged her peers to explore new research avenues and expand their work’s impact, ultimately benefiting society at large.
