KKU Partners with Ministry of Public Health for “Doctors to You” Project, Focusing on Cholangiocarcinoma Screening and Early Detection

On July 29, 2024, the Cholangiocarcinoma Research Institute at Khon Kaen University (KKU), under the leadership of the Institute Director, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Watcharin Loilome, organized a team of medical professionals to deliver free health screenings and education on Cholangiocarcinoma prevention. This initiative, in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Health, is part of a broader effort to enhance healthcare services and improve access in remote areas, ultimately aiming to uplift the quality of life for residents.

The project, known as “Doctors to You,” was launched in honor of His Majesty the King’s 6th cycle birthday, celebrated on July 28, 2024. The event was held at the District Conference Center in Kranuan, Khon Kaen Province.

“This project is designed to bring quality healthcare to people in remote areas,” said Assoc. Prof. Dr. Watcharin Loilome. “Our team from the Cholangiocarcinoma Research Institute is offering free health screenings and educational sessions on Cholangiocarcinoma, a critical health issue in the Northeast region. Early detection is key, and by reaching out to these communities, we aim to identify cases earlier, reduce mortality rates, and enhance the overall quality of life.”

During the event, 302 participants were screened for liver fluke infection using the OV ATK Kit, with 10 individuals (3.31%) testing positive. Additionally, 288 people underwent ultrasound screenings for Cholangiocarcinoma, with 4 individuals (1.38%) identified as potentially having the disease. A further 20 participants were referred for treatment for other medical conditions.

This outreach by the Cholangiocarcinoma Research Institute is part of KKU’s commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being, which emphasizes ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all ages, and SDG 10: Reduced Inequality, focusing on equitable access to healthcare. The initiative not only facilitates early diagnosis and treatment but also raises public awareness about critical health issues, fostering community involvement in healthcare and contributing to a healthier, more sustainable society.
