Australian Ambassador to Thailand visits KKU International College and gives a talk on “Thailand-Australian Bilateral Relationship and Australia’s Regional Role”

Tuesday July 2, 2024 – H.E. Ms. Angela Jane Macdonald, the Australian Ambassador to Thailand and her delegation visited Khon Kaen University to discuss academic collaboration and other interesting topics. The International College, Khon Kaen University acted as the host of the event. Asst. Prof. Sirimonporn Thipsingh, Ph.D., Dean of the International College; lecturers; staff, and undergraduate students majoring in International Relation and Diplomacy attended the special talk on “Thailand-Australian Relationship and Australia’s Regional Role”.

 

The event went on smoothly, and the talk was principally on the over 80 years long relationship between Thailand and Australia, the free trade support under the Development and Economy Collaboration Organization, the target of which is strategic reliance and mutual understanding, through discussion and widely opened cooperation at all levels within the strategic framework.

H.E. Ms. Angela Jane Macdonald mentioned in the talk that the strategic partnership between Australia and Thailand was established in 2020. The operation for bilateral relation development has been carried out through different activities, participation, regular top officers meetings, and enhancement of transparent communications between the two countries. An example of participation under the strategic partnership is the annual meeting of ministers from the two countries to revise collaboration in different aspects such as trading, investment, and security. In addition, senior officers also meet regularly to discuss implementation of plans that covers organizations’ collaboration in different issues such as cross-boundery environmental challenges, educational and cultural exchanges, exchanges related to businesses and communities that enhance citizen relationship and long-term economic collaboration. The aim is to build strategic reliance and mutual understanding through open discussion and collaboration at all levels under the strategic partnership framework.

“Australia is the oldest discussion partner in ASEAN. At the end of 2021, the ASEAN-Australia relationship was upgraded to all aspects of strategic partnership. Australia reiterated being the core of ASEAN in the regional security structure. ASEAN is considered very important in the competitive context of the powerful countries in Indo-Pacific, and Australia is aware of the potentialities of ASEAN and the regional growth. ASEAN and Australian leaders began to meet annually like other partners in ASEAN. Australia supports and assists ASEAN in many aspects. For Thailand, with our good relationship, bilateral trade development and investment will lead to growth and security of our two countries.”
