KKU Humanities and Social Sciences transfers technology and innovation to the community to promote community economic development at Dong Muang Am Archaeological Site, Khao Suan Kwang District

August 31, 2022 – Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and the Innovation and Enterprise Section of Khon Kaen University held an event for transferring technology and innovation in humanities and social sciences to the community under the topic: “Creative Folklore, 2022: Storytelling in marketing from the cultural wisdom and heritage to promote economy at Dong Muang Am Archaeological Sire, Khao Suan Kwang District, Khon Kaen”. Mr. Kornchawanwit Chaipeerawat, Khao Suan Kwang District Head Officer welcomed the team from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and the Innovation and Enterprise Section of Khon Kaen University and explained about the urban development vision of the district to become a pleasant town with delicious foods and pleasant tourism spots. Next, Dr. Kaewta Jantaranusorn, who is responsible for the project, made a reporting speech. Assoc. Prof. Orathai Pia-ura, Ph.D., Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences presided over the opening session. Among distinguished participants were Mr. Tawee Aransri, President of Dong Muang Am Sub-district Administrative Organization, the network, heads of organizations, local leaders and villagers from 15 villages in Dong Muang Am, Khao Suan Kwang District, Khon Kaen.

The project for transferring technology and innovation in humanities and social sciences to the community emerged from the integration of interdisciplinary knowledge for building the database for Dong Muang Am Archaeological Site. The place is the fifth largest archaeological site of the country and the first of Isan. The objective is to add different other dimensions to the database that will lead to understanding of the heritage place of local wisdom at Dong Muang Am Archaeological Site. The work has been implemented under the concept: “Unlocking the secret of the thousand-year territory of Dong Muang Am, developing the important place, silk and rock salt, and cultural nurturing”.

Dr. Kaewta Jantaranusor explained. “This project is aimed at integrating expertise of academics in different fields to study and compile information related to socio-cultural roots of Dong Muang Am Archaeological Site for tourism purposes. The tourism will involve health and gastronomy and at the same time, the collaborating network will be supported in order to develop the economy of the area by enhancing the cultural and local wisdom, especially after the spread of Covid-19.  The activities have been designed to involve all sectors and enable learning and sharing with the community for extending the cultural and local wisdom.”

Assoc. Prof. Orathai Pia-ura, Ph.D., Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences said, “The project activities this time will lead to extension of local programs for development of the locality that will stimulate the economy of Khao Suan Kwang by bringing story telling contents of the locality as the technology and innovation that promote the cultural and conservational tourism market.”

The activities included learning promotion activities and story-telling of the youths. The activities were carried out with cooperation from Dong Muang Am Educational Division, under the theme: “Appreciating Arts at Archaeological Site”. The first activity took place on August 20-21, 2025, with 346 participants. The second will be from August 31 to September 2, 2025. There are exchanges of information and knowledge among lecturers and staff from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and people from Dong Muang Am community. There are special talks on different topics to enhance awareness of the grandeur and values of the important civilization sites of the communities that await integration of cooperation from different sectors and in-depth databases that will be useful in various dimensions.
