On September 17, 2024, Khon Kaen University opened its Flood Relief Assistance Center at the Sirikunakorn Building, Office of the President, to spearhead a vital mission—delivering essential supplies to flood-stricken communities in Nong Khai Province. The launch marked the first day of a major relief operation aimed at supporting those hardest hit by the severe flooding in the region.
Ajarn Natsamol Tanakulrungsarit, Vice President for Legal Affairs and Communications at KKU, emphasized the widespread devastation caused by the floods along the Mekong River, impacting vast areas across northern and northeastern Thailand. In response to this urgent crisis, KKU established the relief center to efficiently coordinate and distribute aid to those in need. The center will serve as a collection point for donations of dry food, drinking water, and other necessities from government bodies, private enterprises, and the general public. Today, the first convoy of trucks departed, delivering hope and much-needed supplies from Khon Kaen to Nong Khai.
Adding to these efforts, the Faculty of Interdisciplinary Studies, based in Nong Khai, moved quickly to set up its own flood relief command center at its administration building. With urgency, they began collecting supplies and dispatching them directly to the victims.
“Every year, Khon Kaen University dedicates itself to assisting flood-affected communities in the northeastern region, reflecting our commitment to serving society. The donations we receive will be delivered daily to ensure timely and widespread relief for those impacted in Nong Khai,” said Ajarn Natsamol.
Today’s efforts were led by Asst. Prof. Dr. Kiat Sangaroon, Dean of the Faculty of Interdisciplinary Studies, who, along with his team from Khon Kaen, joined forces with Assoc. Prof. Dr. Orathai Piayura, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Ms. Sunipa Sawai-ngern, Director of the Office of the President, Mr. Thanya Pakdee, Director of Central Administration, along with KKU faculty, staff, and students. The group visited four key locations, including Meechai Wittaya School in Nong Khai Municipality and relief centers in Kong Nang Subdistrict, Tha Bo District, and Wiang Khuk Subdistrict in Mueang Nong Khai District. In Wiang Khuk, the team took to boats to personally deliver food, water, and essential supplies to those stranded by the rising waters, offering words of encouragement and solidarity during this trying time.
One of the student volunteers, Mr. Jakkrit Muenkhansee, a fourth-year student in Sports Science and Exercise at KKU, expressed his pride in being part of the relief effort.
“I’m from Nong Khai, and though my hometown hasn’t been directly affected, seeing the suffering in the city deeply moved me. The floods are severe this year, and I’m grateful for the chance to contribute. I hope to continue volunteering until the situation improves,” said Jakkrit.
