KKU’s Physical Infrastructure and Environmental Divisions Join Forces to Promote Sustainable Ecosystem with Tree-Planting Initiative

Khon Kaen University (KKU) takes a significant step toward sustainability with a large-scale tree-planting event, honoring His Majesty the King while boosting the university’s ecological balance and livability.

On September 17, 2024, KKU’s Physical Infrastructure and Environmental Divisions, under the leadership of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Choopong Thongkamsamut, Vice President for Physical Ecosystem and Environment, came together with over 100 staff members to plant trees at the reservoir near Medical Center 7. This initiative not only aims to enhance the university’s green spaces but also contributes to KKU’s goal of becoming a zero-carbon emission campus.
Joining the event were Assoc. Prof. Dr. Piyawat Foytong, Assistant to the President for Infrastructure and Environment; Mr. Wachara Pattanawiwattanaporn, Acting Director of the Buildings and Grounds Division; Mr. Santi Buahom, Acting Director of the Utilities and Environmental Division; and Mr. Morrakot Subin, Director of the Protection and Security Division. Together, they led the effort to plant over 600 teak trees and 60 Cassia bakeriana trees, transforming the landscape and ensuring the university becomes more sustainable and aesthetically pleasing.

Speaking at the event, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Choopong highlighted the university’s ambition to compete for the TQC Plus National Quality Award. “Our divisions are working tirelessly, integrating systematic and data-driven approaches to continuously improve operations,” he said. “This tree-planting initiative is a reflection of our commitment to making KKU a leader in sustainability and environmental stewardship.”
The Buildings and Grounds Division focuses on creating functional and beautiful workspaces, the Utilities and Environmental Division maintains green spaces and addresses natural hazards quickly, and the Protection and Security Division is proactive in preventing incidents. “The work of these divisions is essential to the university’s success,” Dr. Choopong noted. “Though they often work behind the scenes, from housekeepers to technicians, their efforts are vital in creating a supportive and thriving campus environment.”
Dr. Choopong also reflected on the transformation of the reservoir area, which was once barren but is now flourishing. “It’s inspiring to see how far this area has come. Today, it serves as a peaceful retreat for staff and students alike, contributing to a healthier and more enjoyable campus environment.”

This event marks a critical step in KKU’s long-term vision of becoming a zero-carbon emission university, ensuring that green spaces and a balanced ecosystem play an integral role in its future. “By increasing our green spaces, we are improving the quality of life for everyone at KKU while reinforcing our commitment to environmental sustainability,” Dr. Choopong added.
