In a heartwarming show of support, over 200 performers and hundreds of attendees gathered at Khon Kaen University on September 7, 2024, for the HOPE for Health Charity Concert. The event, organized by the Faculty of Medicine in collaboration with the Mor Lam Reung Tor Klon Association and renowned life music artists, raised an impressive 3.8 million baht to support stroke patients in need.
Held at the Golden Jubilee Convention Center, the concert drew a lively crowd of supporters who flocked to the venue from as early as 4 p.m. The event was honored by the presence of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Charnchai Panthongviriyakul, President of Khon Kaen University, who presided over the opening ceremony.
Assoc. Prof. Pattarapong Makarawate, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Khon Kaen University, expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support and explained the significance of the event.
“This concert is more than just entertainment. It’s about providing essential financial aid for underprivileged stroke patients who struggle to cover medical expenses beyond their insurance coverage. Stroke is the third most common cause of death in Thailand, with a new case every three minutes. This event helps bridge the gap, ensuring that every patient has access to the care they need,” he said.
Stroke often leads to long-term disabilities, with many patients unable to perform daily activities or return to work. This not only affects their lives but also places a significant financial burden on their families. The funds raised will directly assist patients from low-income backgrounds, covering medical expenses and rehabilitation costs.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Charnchai Panthongviriyakul added, “Srinagarind Hospital, under KKU’s Faculty of Medicine, is a top-tier university hospital in Northeastern Thailand. We handle complex cases referred from hospitals across the region, leading to higher treatment costs. Many of our patients, particularly those with limited financial resources, struggle to afford the care they need. This concert not only raises funds but also raises awareness about stroke prevention and treatment. On behalf of KKU, I would like to extend my deepest appreciation to the organizers, performers, sponsors, and everyone who contributed to making this event a success.”
Raising Awareness and Saving Lives: FAST Action for Stroke
In addition to the musical performances, attendees had the opportunity to learn about stroke prevention through an exhibition titled “Access, Understand, Prevent Stroke” and a seminar on “Life After Paralysis.” The seminar featured Ja Loy Henry, a former stroke patient who had experienced paralysis but recovered after receiving treatment at Srinagarind Hospital. He shared his personal journey from illness to recovery, even returning to his passion for playing the guitar and singing.
Medical experts, including Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nuttaset Manimmanakorn, a rehabilitation medicine specialist; Assoc. Prof. Kannikar Kongbunnkiat, a stroke and hypertension specialist; and Dr. Waranon Mangkhang, an intervention specialist, emphasized the importance of early detection. They explained the FAST method for recognizing stroke symptoms:
1. F for Face: Look for sudden facial drooping.
2. A for Arm: Check for weakness in one arm.
3. S for Speech: Notice if speech becomes slurred or incoherent.
4. T for Time: Act quickly! Seek medical attention within 270 minutes to minimize damage.
“The faster patients seek treatment, the better their chances of recovery,” said Dr. Waranon. “We’re fortunate to have advanced procedures at Srinagarind Hospital, such as thrombectomy, which removes blood clots. However, this procedure is costly, which is why the funds from this concert are so crucial. They help ensure that more patients can access life-saving treatments.”
An Unforgettable Night of Music and Giving
The charity concert was a resounding success, both for its cause and its entertainment value. With a star-studded lineup of over 200 performers, including Rabeab Watthasilp, Mor Lam Jai Kern Roi, Phuyai Ban Finland, and Jakrapan Lam Ploen, the audience was treated to a spectacular night of music, Mor Lam performances, and life music classics. The show was live-streamed on KKU’s Faculty of Medicine Facebook page, allowing fans nationwide to donate online and contribute to the cause.
Two enthusiastic concertgoers, Supanee Wongsri (73) and Siriporn Baker (75), lifelong fans of Jakrapan Lam Ploen, shared their excitement:
favorite singer was performing, so we invited our friends and came here to cheer all night! The venue was great, cool and comfortable. We enjoyed the performances, and it feels good to know that our contribution is helping those in need. We’ll definitely be back if there’s another concert.”
With the support of generous donors and enthusiastic fans, the HOPE for Health Charity Concert not only raised over 3.8 million baht but also brought hope and a better future to stroke patients.
