August 20, 2020 at Sarasin Room, Sirikunakorn Building – Khon Kaen University led by Assoc. Prof. Charnchai Panthongviriyakul, M.D., President of Khon Kaen University welcomed the Following-up Committee on Consumers Protection, which was led by Dr. Pansak Janpanya, the Committee Chairman. The Committee is working under the National Broadcasting and Telecommunication Commission (NBTC) and was visiting LLU in order to follow-up on the implementation under the academic agreement on the study and establishment of 5G Experimenting and Testing Center. Over 100 administrators of KKU and the committee members attended the welcoming session before moving on to visit Faculty of Agriculture.
Assoc. Prof. Charnchai Panthongviriyakul, M.D., President of Khon Kaen University said that in the period in which the changes of digital technologies are leaping ahead, Khon Kaen University has set up the policy and the 2021 implementation plans to prepare the organization for the digital age. This is being carried out in parallel to the main university’s missions in instruction, research and academic services. Research will be developed in depth in the aspect of information technology in order to acquire bodies of knowledge that enable expansion of teaching and learning, academic service and internal incubation towards digital innovations, which are the outcome of the work and expertise of KKU personnel including students. Coordination will be promoted with outside organizations, both governmental and private to build digital innovations that suit the working, daily life, and project-collaborating businesses. The working system will be developed together with learning based on digital technologies so that the operation of the university will be efficient and effective and can respond to the future changes of the external society.
Dr. Pansak Janpanya, Chairman of the Consumers Protection Committee expressed his appreciation of KKU as the center for education and the inventor of many new things, especially at present in which technologies are advanced. Basic infrastructures require networks that are prepared for the changes, particularly in the communication system and internet signal. The 5G or the 5th generation of communications will not only grow by means of mobile phone, but also all types of equipment that are connected to the internet. The National Broadcasting and Telecommunication Commission (NBTC) sees the importance in this respect and hopes that Thai economy will be propelled using digital technology. This is confirmed by the Government to certainly emerge, and thus KKU and 2 more universities are assigned as the node for establishing the 5G Experimenting and Testing Center which will connect with research and instruction. This will later be modified for other dimensions in the country.
Asst. Prof. Denpong Soonpakdee, Ph.D., Vice President for Digital revealed about the progress of the 5G Experimenting and Testing Center that the research and development project for the use case comprises the development of 5G Smart Farm that will accommodate outcome-based precision farming (Smart Organic Farm and Smart Dairy Farm), the information platform for 5G Field Practice Solution, Farm Machinery Control System through 5G Network, Vertical Farming, Internet of Things. There have been two points to set up the 5G Experimenting and Testing Center, i.e., the marijuana farm and chicken farm. The objectives are to respond to the government’s strategy and to experiment on and test the use of 5G. This is because the university is ready in this regard. The knowledge and experiences will be shared with the public, private and governmental organizations for awareness as well as understanding and access to 5G technologies for the future of the country.
