Tuesday May 23, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. – Khon Kaen University and Fortinet Security Network (Thailand) Co. Ltd. signed an MOU for collaboration. Assoc. Prof. Sirapat Chiawchanwattana, Ph.D., Dean of the College of Computing represented KKU while Khun Paktapa Chatkomet, Thailand Fortinet Manager represented the Fortinet Security Network (Thailand) Co. Ltd. On this occasion, Assoc. Prof. Charnchai Panthongviriyakul, M.D., President of Khon Kaen University presided over the MOU signing ceremony and welcomed the delegation. The event took place at Wittayawipat Building, College of Computing, Khon Kaen University.
Program of study and human resources in cyber
Khon Kaen University has carried out the national strategies and the key world trends especially those related to cyber security as the framework and strategies of the University. Major policies have been assigned to the College of Computing to develop a program of study that is modern and responds to the world trend in cyber security.
Assoc. Prof. Charnchai Panthongviriyakul, M.D., President of Khon Kaen University disclosed that the development and transformation of the new instructional paradigm is directed towards preparing graduates who possess skills, knowledge and competency that answer the needs of Thailand digital business and industry. The collaboration with the entrepreneur this time benefits both parties and will result in the development of programs that answer the needs in terms of cyber security with the international standards. The graduates will be able to apply their knowledge in real occupations in the future.
Assoc. Prof. Sirapat Chiawchanwattana, Ph.D., Dean of the College of Computing, added that the College of Computing is one institution under Khon Kaen strategies in preparing personnel and research work in computing in order to answer the national growth with information and computerization based on Cloud. Cyber Security is always taken into account for safety in all online transactions. The undergraduate program in cyber security is being developed under the collaboration between the Council of University President of Meeting and the National Cyber Security Agency. The Computing program of the College of Computing will offer this program with emphases on the skills, knowledge, and competency of graduates that answer the needs of Thailand digital business and industry. The Thai government also has the project to develop new undergraduate programs that incorporate industrial-based skill.
Challenges in cyber security
Challenges in cyber security in the world are aggravating everywhere, from the double growth of new species of ransomware to attacks that are increasing on the operational technologies in the industrial group or OT, as well as the increase of new attacks called Malware-as-a-Service (MaaS). In many organizations, new attacks are becoming common, leading to the importance of cyber security skills.
Khun Paktapa Chatkomet, Thailand Fortinet Manager represented the Fortinet Security Network (Thailand) Co. Ltd., said that besides creating technologies and innovation in security in this regard, Fortinet trusts in the importance of personnel with expertise. Thus, they have founded the Fortinet Training Institute, at present the biggest organizer of training programs in cyber security that cover the widest range in the industry. The training covers the program of Network Security Expert or NSE and is co-working with leading academic institutions all over the world to build learning platforms that lessen the gaps of skills, create jobs and increase professionals in the field of cyber security for business organizations in many countries worldwide.
The new dimension – private sector joins academic institutions to prepare top cyber personnel.
Khun Paktapa added that Fortinet Thailand is pleased to strengthen cooperation with Khon Kaen University and to be able to transfer knowledge to the students so that they become competent in cyber security. This will be done through training at the national level with the objective to increase personnel with expertise in cyber security and lessen to gap in cyber security skills.
The collaboration with Khon Kaen University is another important step to develop the new generation to become experts with the basic but strong skills in cyber security. It will answer the needs for personnel and will support the Government, the business and industrial sector so that they will operate safely under the threats that bring impact to the business and economy at present and the future.
Assoc. Prof. Sirapat Chiawchanwattana, Ph.D., Dean of the College of Computing said that the College of Computing will join the Fortinet security academy program. Initially the College will send lecturers to the Training the Trainer program and these lecturers will then take the test for the Fortinet NSE Certification. Following this, the students of KKU will have access to resources and learning media in international cyber security as well as receiving benefits in taking the test for certifying their professional standard from Fortinet.
