The Young Designer Group and alumni of Faculty of Architecture of Khon Kaen University shows the indigenous identity of Isan in the form of products and fashion designs at the Esaan Fabric Expo 2019
September 30, 2019, lecturers and students of Textile Design and Fashion Program, Department of Design and the alumni of Faculty of Architecture presented their work at the press conference for Esaan Fabric Expo 2019 which was held at Prachasamosorn 1-2, Avani Hotel and Convention Center, Khon Kaen.
The Expo featured press conference for the fashion shows by the Young Designer Group, Textile Design and Fashion Program, Department of Design and the alumni of Faculty of Architecture; and 10 booths of young generation designers. The work of the students from KKU Faculty of Architecture received a lot of appreciation by the visitors because of the smart integration of Esaan fabric with the current fashion.
Ajarn Niti Nimala, a lecturer of Rajabhat University Udonthani, a graduate alumnus from Class 1 of Textile Design and Fashion Program said that after graduation, he has always applied the knowledge in developing products that involve culture in their design. The knowledge from the graduate studies has changed his job perspectives. He began looking at the local community context more for accuracy in production and for decrease of differences between the designer and the community. “I have turned to integrate modern technology and local wisdom together. We are the young generation with new bodies of knowledge, which, when paired with the cultural capital, enable changes to our products. The indigenous fabrics in the communities have been produced with more dimensions. New lines of design work have emphasized full-function products that also meet with the production bases and the community context of Udonthani, the source of ‘khit’ fabric. There are a lot of weavers of cotton and silk here, who have expertise in making and designing patterns and hence the new products with contemporary-designed have emerged with the sense of Udonthani identity. These products really extend incomes for the local communities.”
“The exhibition with the younger students this time made me see multiplicity of work and this demonstrates the attention and patience of the program lecturers who really respond to the community context. I see new designers who will go out to produce Isan fabrics in the future. I’m always happy to join events like this. Faculty of Architecture always provides chances for new designers to exhibit their work to the public.”
Esaan Fabric Expo 2019 will be held on November 1-5, 2019 at Khon Kaen Internationa Conference and Exhibition Center (KICE). The Expo aims to increase marketing channels, to build confidence and identity of Esaan fabrics, to develop connections and trading networks and the cluster Esaan fabric producers together.
