On Friday, June 27, 2025, the Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts at Khon Kaen University, in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, hosted the performance “Miscellany of Khon” at the Faculty’s Theater. The event aimed to preserve, promote, and pass on the art of Khon, one of Thailand’s most revered classical performance traditions, to audiences in the Northeastern region.
“Miscellany of Khon” presented the richness of Thai Khon through a contemporary lens, combining graceful movements, elaborate costumes, and storytelling elements. The performance aimed to connect with modern audiences while showcasing the meticulous training and dedication of Khon artists, highlighting its value as a treasured form of national intangible cultural heritage.
The production was led by Mr. Jitti Chompee, head of the performance team, who played a vital role in directing, rehearsing, and structuring the show to convey the cultural essence of Thai Khon in a meaningful and contemporary way. His leadership bridged traditional knowledge with modern stagecraft and closely supported the performers throughout the process.
The event was honored by the presence of Her Serene Highness Princess Sirikitiya Jensen, project advisor and curator, who met with attendees and shared her vision for promoting Thai arts and culture. Welcoming remarks were delivered by Associate Professor Dr. Charnchai Panthongviriyakul, President of Khon Kaen University, alongside representatives from the Ministry of Culture and Khon Kaen Province.
Distinguished guests from various institutions, both within and outside KKU, also attended the performance, including Ms. Petchrat Saithong, Inspector-General of the Ministry of Culture; Mr. Prachuap Rakphaet, Deputy Governor of Khon Kaen; and Assistant Professor Dr. Burin Plengdeesakul, Dean of the Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts. The event saw strong participation from university administrators, deans, directors, faculty members, and students, reflecting the collective support and importance of this initiative.
The program featured a documentary screening about Khon, a conversation with Princess Sirikitiya Jensen, and the highlight performance of “Miscellany of Khon” by a professional troupe from the central region. The event drew widespread interest from faculty, students, and the general public and marked a successful collaboration between governmental bodies and higher education institutions in promoting Thai cultural arts. It also served as an inspiration for younger generations to recognize and preserve the enduring beauty of Thai traditional performance.
