Chiang Mai, Thailand – Students from Khon Kaen University (KKU) and Chiang Mai University (CMU) have continued their tradition of volunteerism in the 33rd joint Rural Development Volunteer Camp, with a strong emphasis on implementing sustainable development concepts.
The camp, which took place from April 21-26, 2027, brought together over 80 students from both universities for activities held at Chiang Mai University and surrounding communities.
According to Ms. Suchanya Tabutta, a third-year engineering student and the camp leader for CMU, the students participated in a blend of academic, community service, and cultural exchange activities. A key project involved a workshop on “Dust-Free Room and Clean Air Ventilation Systems” conducted by CMU’s Nakhonping Energy Research and Development Institute.
Following the training, the students applied their new knowledge by installing one of these systems at the Ban Rai Child Development Center in the Fah Ham sub-district. The project aimed to provide clean and safe air for young children in the community. Additionally, volunteers improved the landscape and created vibrant educational materials at the Viang Ping Children’s Home in the Mae Rim district, bringing smiles and happiness to the children there.
Mr. Sittiporn Kumphasee, the camp leader for KKU, expressed his gratitude for the experience. “On behalf of Khon Kaen University, I feel honored and delighted to have participated in this camp,” he said. “We gained friendship, experience, and valuable lessons not only in community service but also through the exchange of cultures, ideas, and perspectives between students from both institutions. It broadened our horizons and inspired everyone involved.” He thanked CMU and all participants for their dedication, expressing hope that the friendships formed will lead to a lasting relationship between the two universities.
The project was designed to advance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) while promoting a “Sustainable-Focused” identity, a core value for KKU students. It aimed to instill a sense of social and environmental responsibility through hands-on action, while also building teamwork skills and strengthening the bond between the two institutions.
The camp’s atmosphere was described as warm and welcoming, featuring activities such as a sports day to build camaraderie and local cultural lessons. The event concluded with a traditional campfire performance, celebrating the strong and growing friendship between the students of both universities.
