KKU Engineering Triumphs on Global Stage, Clinching ‘Best Presentation Award’ in Japan for Smart Livestock AI Innovation

KHON KAEN, THAILAND — The Faculty of Engineering at Khon Kaen University has continued to strengthen its international academic reputation. A team of university researchers and faculty members recently won the prestigious “Best Presentation Award” in Session S8 at the 7th Asia Joint Conference on Computing and Electrical Technologies (AJCC 2026). The accolade recognized their pioneering research on applying artificial intelligence (AI) to elevate Thai livestock management. The international conference was held at the TKP Sapporo Station Conference Center in Sapporo, Japan, from 12 to 15 May 2026.

The award-winning research paper is titled “DETECTION OF EARLY ESTRUS IN DAIRY COWS VIA MILK QUALITY ASSESSMENT: A NEAR-INFRARED MILK SENSING SYSTEM AND SIGNAL-PROCESSING PIPELINE WITH MACHINE LEARNING”. This breakthrough is a collaborative effort led by Assistant Professor Norawut Tonmitr, Assistant Professor Arthit Phuphaphud, Assistant Professor Panawit Hanpinitsak, Associate Professor Thatchapong Katanyukul, Lecturer Chanon Suntara, Ph.D., and Assistant Professor Saroat Thanusin. The team presented an innovative near-infrared milk sensing system integrated with a signal-processing pipeline and machine learning algorithms to detect early-stage estrus in dairy cows—a critical operational challenge for dairy farmers.

The innovation received high praise from the international committee of experts for directly addressing a major pain point in the agricultural and livestock sectors. By enhancing farm management precision, reducing economic losses, and boosting raw milk production quality, the project aligns perfectly with global smart farming trends.

This international achievement underscores the advanced research capabilities of the Faculty of Engineering at KKU. By successfully bridging complex engineering solutions with agricultural needs, the university continues to drive high-impact innovations onto the global stage, supporting sustainable development and technological transformation in the region’s primary industries.
