KKU and POSN Foundation Launch 23rd Thailand Astronomy Olympiad to Cultivate Future Scientists

The Faculty of Science at Khon Kaen University hosts 162 secondary school students from across the nation for the prestigious national-level astronomy competition.


On 10 May 2026, the Promotion of Academic Olympiad and Development of Science Education Foundation (POSN), under the patronage of Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana Krom Luang Naradhiwas Rajanagarindra, in collaboration with the Faculty of Science, Khon Kaen University (KKU), officially inaugurated the 23rd Thailand Astronomy Olympiad (TAO23). The opening ceremony was held at the Srichan Ballroom, Charoen Thani Hotel, Khon Kaen, with 162 lower and upper secondary school students from 14 POSN centres nationwide participating. The event was presided over by Associate Professor Piniti Ratananukul, Ph.D., Secretary-General of the POSN Foundation, alongside executives from Khon Kaen University and the Faculty of Science.

Assistant Professor Denpong Soodphakdee, Ph.D., Vice President for Education and Digital at Khon Kaen University, delivered the welcoming remarks. He stated: “Khon Kaen University has a vital mission to promote education and research, particularly in science and technology. This competition is not merely a test of knowledge, but a formative experience that broadens horizons and fosters friendships. I believe the lessons learned here will be a crucial step in inspiring the next generation of Thai astronomers.

Assistant Professor Angkana Boonyued, Ph.D., Dean of the Faculty of Science, reported on the competition’s objectives: “The National Astronomy Olympiad aims to identify students with exceptional talent in astronomy and astrophysics to represent Thailand in international arenas. The assessment includes theoretical, data analysis, and observational sections to reflect the students’ full potential. Furthermore, participants will visit the Sirindhorn Museum (Phu Kum Khao Dinosaur Research Centre) in Kalasin, Thailand’s first dinosaur research centre, to inspire further interest in natural sciences.”

Associate Professor Piniti Ratananukul, Ph.D., Secretary-General of the POSN Foundation, officially declared the competition open, noting its significance: “This stage allows students to develop scientific thinking and problem-solving skills. Notably, this year’s event coincides with the 30th anniversary of the 1995 total solar eclipse in Thailand. The international success of Thai students is the result of the dedication of all stakeholders. I encourage everyone to use this opportunity to develop their potential as a foundation for personal growth.

The ceremony included the formal procession of the competition flag and the flags of the 14 participating POSN centres:

  • POSN Centres: Chiang Mai University, Naresuan University, Ubon Ratchathani University, Suranaree University of Technology, Burapha University, King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi – Wat Nuannoradit School, Chulalongkorn University, Samsen Wittayalai School, Suankularb Wittayalai School, Mahidol Wittayanusorn School, Silpakorn University, Walailak University, Prince of Songkla University (Pattani Campus), and the host, Khon Kaen University.

The hosting of the 23rd Thailand Astronomy Olympiad reflects the commitment of the Faculty of Science, KKU, to nurturing scientific talent for national development.
