KKU Receives “Good” Award for Outstanding Smoke-Free Higher Education Institution 2024–2026

Khon Kaen University (KKU) has achieved a significant milestone, receiving a “Good” level award for an “Outstanding Smoke-Free Higher Education Institution for 2024–2026” from the Medical Association of Thailand under Royal Patronage. This recognition is the result of dedicated and continuous policy implementation, driven by the strong collaboration of administrators, staff, and students, leading to tangible outcomes and national-level student achievements.

On 23 February 2026, at the Medical Association of Thailand Building in Bangkok, Assistant Professor Prapansak Chaveerach, DVM., Ph.D., Assistant to the President for Student Affairs and Innovation Commercialization, represented Khon Kaen University to receive the Outstanding Smoke-Free Higher Education Institution Award. The award was presented by Professor Emeritus Somsri Pausawasdi, MD, Ph.D., President of the Medical Council of Thailand, during the Fahsai academic conference for smoke-free higher education institutions for the year 2026.

This award validates KKU’s success under the “Smoke-Free Higher Education Institution Development Project,” reflecting its commitment to creating a safe and health-promoting environment for the KKU community. This achievement stems from systematic operations and integrated cooperation from all sectors, beginning with the announcement of a clear policy, raising awareness through various campaigns, and establishing the campus as a smoke-free zone.

Previously, on 15 January 2026, Khon Kaen University welcomed the award assessment committee, led by Dr. Wanchat Supachaturas, Vice Chairman of the project, for the final on-site evaluation. The university presented its comprehensive implementation across all dimensions, including policy, management, environmental arrangements, and the active participation of students and staff, which laid the foundation for this prestigious award.

Additionally, at the Fahsai academic conference, representatives from Khon Kaen University were honoured to participate in a panel discussion on “Impact Time & Place – A Timeline of Outcomes for Outstanding Smoke-Free Higher Education Institutions.” Mr. Nathaphon Phuangkhot, a Senior Education Specialist, and Miss Thanaporn Yowaphui, an Educator from the Division of Student Development and Alumni Relations, shared insights into the university’s journey from past to present, conveying their experiences and success strategies to a network of higher education institutions nationwide.

The policy’s success is also mirrored in the capabilities of KKU students, who have won several national competitions. These include the “Youth Change Maker Smoke-Free 2026” award in a speech competition won by students from the Faculty of Nursing, and a first-place prize in the short video category of the AI-powered creative media contest, secured by students from the Medical Illustration programme, Faculty of Medicine. These achievements demonstrate that students understand the issues and are ready to be influential advocates for a smoke-free society.

Khon Kaen University remains committed to fostering understanding and cooperation with students, staff, and all network partners to reduce and eliminate the use of conventional and electronic cigarettes. The university aims to promote an environment that supports the well-being of all and serves as a model for society.
