On 25 January 1966, His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej graciously enacted the Khon Kaen University Act. This historic moment marked the establishment of an institution founded upon a clear and resolute mission: to enhance the quality of life of the people of Thailand’s Northeastern Region (Isan), a region long challenged by drought, poverty, and limited access to education.
Today, as Khon Kaen University (KKU) enters its 62nd year in 2026, the institution has demonstrated that this royal commitment has not only materialised but has surpassed all initial expectations. KKU has transitioned into an internationally recognised research university.

A Vision to Become a World-Leading Research and Development University
Guided by the vision, “A World-Leading Research and Development University,” Khon Kaen University is dedicated to creating value and generating comprehensive positive social impact. This development is structured upon four core pillars:
Pillar 1: Academic Excellence and Innovation Pillar 2: Smart Campus and ESG Integration (Environmental, Social, and Governance) Pillar 3: Optimisation of University Resources for Growth and Sustainability Pillar 4: Societal Contribution via Cultural Involvement and Community Integration
From its humble beginnings with three faculties and 107 students, Khon Kaen University has expanded to 24 faculties spanning Science and Technology, Health Sciences, Humanities and Social Sciences, and interdisciplinary fields, supported by specialised research centres and modern infrastructure. This transformation reflects its evolution from a vital regional centre to a national hub of knowledge and innovation.
Global Recognition: A Leader in Sustainable Development
The Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings for 2026 affirm the University’s excellence in driving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Khon Kaen University has garnered outstanding top rankings globally, including: 12th in the world for Gender Equality (SDG 5), 50th in the world for Zero Hunger (SDG 2), 51st in the world for No Poverty (SDG 1), and 101–200 in the world for Quality Education (SDG 4).
These rankings highlight the University’s measurable commitment to social impact, encompassing gender equity, agricultural innovation for food security, improved livelihoods for underserved communities, and inclusive access to quality education.
Additionally, in the QS World University Rankings, Khon Kaen University is ranked 951–1000 globally and 6th in Thailand. In the THE World University Rankings, the University is placed 1,201–1,500 globally and also ranks 6th nationally, reflecting its sustained potential and ongoing advancement.

“Social Devotion”: The First Higher Education Institute to Achieve TQC+ for Societal Contribution
At the heart of Khon Kaen University lies its defining value, “Social Devotion.” This is not merely a slogan but a principle profoundly embedded in every institutional mission, from producing graduates with strong ethics, morality, and social and environmental responsibility, to conducting demand-driven research and delivering academic services that create positive effects upon communities.
This commitment was formally recognised on 13 February 2025, at the Aksra Theatre King Power, during the 23rd Thailand Quality Award ceremony (for the year 2024). Khon Kaen University made history in the Thai higher education sector by becoming the first and only institution to receive the Thailand Quality Class Plus: Societal Contribution (TQC+ Societal Contribution) from the Thailand Productivity Institute, the National Quality Award Office.
Major Transformation for Sustainability
Amid global change, including technological disruption, geopolitical shifts, and demographic decline, Khon Kaen University has undertaken a comprehensive transformation driven by eleven strategic directions.
In Education, the University has shifted its paradigm from teaching-centric to learning-centric methods (Learning Paradigm). It develops new curricula that integrate AI technology, focusing on equipping students with self-learning abilities (“Learning How to Learn”) and fostering a culture of Lifelong Learning. This ensures that graduates are prepared to be leaders in social development and compete within international organisations.
In Research, the institution has pivoted from single-project research to team-based collaborations, generating high-impact results for society. KKU is actively developing a robust Research and Innovation Ecosystem to ensure that research outcomes extend beyond publication and are translated into tangible applications, products, and value-added innovations.
In Internationalisation, the University promotes the creation of Global Learners, Global Alumni, and Global Staff while strengthening its quality global networks and collaborations, particularly with countries in the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS). This effort supports the emerging concept of the “New Isan” and elevates the University’s reputation on the world stage.

Green University Towards Carbon Neutrality
In 2026, Khon Kaen University is steadfastly pursuing the goals of “Green University – KKU Smart City – Carbon Neutrality.” This involves sustainable environmental management, the creation of aesthetic green spaces, the development of efficient energy management systems, internal public transport, and biodiversity conservation.
By integrating ESG principles with Smart Campus development, KKU strives to be both a “Great Place to Live” and the “Best Place to Work,” supported by digital infrastructure, safety, and high-performance governance.
The University has also transformed its physical spaces into open Lifelong Learning Centres, including the Sport Park at Bueng Sithan Lake, Agro Park, Natural History Museum, Science Museum, and Art and Cultural Park, providing inclusive access to learning and quality living for people of all ages.
ASEAN Research and Innovation Hub
As a designated “National Research University,” Khon Kaen University has developed into a regional centre for research and educational innovation. It maintains collaborative networks with leading universities worldwide and plays a pivotal role in driving the development agenda of the Greater Mekong Subregion.
The University’s 15 specialised research centres produce impactful research widely published in leading international journals, garnering significant citations. Crucially, this research is translated into practical uses, generating positive economic and social impacts through the Creative Economy and Cultural Conservation efforts.

Moving Towards a Decade of Sustainable Development
Reflecting upon the royal address delivered by His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej during the inauguration of Khon Kaen University on 20 December 1967: “The establishment of Khon Kaen University is profoundly beneficial because it expands higher education to a most significant region of the country, which will greatly contribute to developing and elevating the living standards of the people in this region.”
Today, that royal aspiration has been fully realised. Khon Kaen University has not only elevated the quality of life for the people in the Northeast but is also acclaimed as a leading research development institution globally. It has become a world-leading research and development university vital to driving the Sustainable Development Goals.
On the occasion of its 62nd anniversary, Khon Kaen University is prepared to move forward with a clear vision, committed to generating innovations for community strength, developing digital infrastructure, managing resources efficiently, and continuing its leadership in regional sustainability. Through good governance and acting as a trustworthy societal model, KKU remains dedicated to honouring the royal commitment to advancing the nation securely and sustainably.
