The ceremony was held at the Jao Por Mor Din Daeng Shrine to bring good fortune and prosperity to the administrators, personnel, and students.
“Jao Por Mor Din Daeng” (The Venerable Spirit of Mor Din Daeng) is a sacred figure that has been revered for a long time. Legend has it that around the 18th Buddhist century, there was a ruler named Thao Thaen Suriya, who held power over the Khon Kaen area and its vicinity. He was steadfastly devoted to Buddhism and led his people toward sustainable well-being and tranquility. His ministers thus bestowed upon him the title “Thao Thaen Suriya Thammma Thirat.” Later, it is believed that he reincarnated as “Ong Jao Mor Din Daeng,” who remains revered by the people of the university until today.
The Jao Por Mor Din Daeng Shrine is a four-portico building surrounded by ambulatories on all four sides, located to the right of the Mor Din Daeng Gate of Khon Kaen University, along Mittraphap Road. Housed inside the main hall is a Buddha image in the Maravichai posture (subduing Mara), which Phra Khru Suthammabhinand, the Abbot of Wat Tham Phra Phothisat, named “Phra Phut Panya Metta Tham” (The Buddha of Wisdom and Compassion). Beneath the image is the statue of Jao Por Mor Din Daeng, the sacred entity that serves as a spiritual anchor for students, personnel, and the local community.
