KKU Academy Develops Medical Education Collaboration in the Greater Mekong Subregion through “Medical Education Workshop Connecting GMS” in Lao PDR

KKU Academy, in collaboration with the Faculty of Medicine, Khon Kaen University, and the University of Health Sciences (UHS), Lao PDR, organized the Medical Education Workshop Connecting GMS on August 4–7, 2025, at Vientiane Capital, Lao PDR. The workshop took place under the project International Collaboration for Online Education Development, whose vision is to transform pedagogy practices and create cross-border academic communities in the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS).

The workshop offered exposure to KKU Academy’s Learning Transformation online course, which was performed through KKU Academy’s LMS and supported by on-campus training sessions. The program was guided by distinguished medical education leaders of Khon Kaen University, i.e., Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rosawan Areemit, Deputy Director for Education, KKU Academy; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Warachaya Phanphruk and Asst. Prof. Dr. Atipong Pathanasethpong, Faculty of Medicine, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Patravoot Vatanasapt, Director of KKU Academy, together with the Academy team.

The workshop could not have been better timed since UHS is in the process of revising its Doctor of Medicine curriculum and enhancing teaching and learning practices to international standards in medical education. Its primary aim was to promote the value of curriculum change among health professionals and faculty members. The training covered essential topics in medical education, i.e., Basics in Teaching and Learning, Learning Outcomes and Constructive Alignment, Assessment, and Active Learning-based Instructional Design.

This project was not only theoretically education-focused but was rather centered on practical knowledge through active learning processes, supplementing real experiences with academic development. It also laid the groundwork for a sustainable medical education network among Khon Kaen University, UHS, and health institutions of Lao PDR, as well as the Mekong region at large.

In addition, KKU Academy organized dialogue and documentary production activities in Luang Prabang, focused on health and well-being amidst the local lifestyle and culture. The documentary presented by Dr. Phouvana Anoulakham, Director of Luang Prabang Provincial Hospital, gave good views on the health needs and concerns of the community as well as on the unique cultural context that contributes positively to the healthiness of the locals.
