“KKUIC Pétanque Club: Field of Creativity” – Share Opportunities, Ignite Life Skills for Underprivileged Children

On September 6, 2025, from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m., at the Baan Luk Rak Children’s Foundation in Khon Kaen, Khon Kaen University International College (KKUIC) carried out the “KKUIC Pétanque Club: Crafting Creativity” project, linking the university with the community through sport as a bridge. The team was warmly welcomed by Teacher Ya, Mr. Suriya Somjai, the founder of Baan Luk Rak, which has supported orphans, children without guardians, and abandoned children in Khon Kaen since 1997.

“Sport is a universal language that opens doors to opportunity. We want children to discover their abilities, practice teamwork, and experience true sportsmanship, because these skills will carry them far beyond the ‘field’,” said Mr. Nathakorn Loedphacharakamon, Assistant Dean for Relationship Management and External Collaboration, capturing the heart of the initiative. Echoing that sentiment, founder Mr. Suriya Somjai added with delight, “Thank you to KKUIC for sharing skills, sport, and kindness. Today the children received more than necessities—they gained encouragement and renewed confidence in themselves.”

Event highlights included an energizing ice-breaking session to spark group spirit, smiles shared over light refreshments, and a pétanque-themed recreational clinic designed to be accessible and enjoyable for all ages. Children learned fundamental techniques while cultivating concentration, accuracy, communication, and responsibility in team play. The day concluded with group photographs and the donation of essential items—sealing warm memories in everyone’s hearts.

The significance of the event stood out in three dimensions aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals: promoting health and well-being through creative physical activity among children and youth (SDG 3); expanding inclusive, hands-on learning opportunities through participatory teaching (SDG 4); and reducing inequalities by widening access to resources and developmental activities for underprivileged children (SDG 10).

The project also reaffirms KKUIC’s role as a “supporter” of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, working tangibly with the community, with the Student Potential Enhancement Division and the Pétanque Club taking the lead, and enthusiastic participation from student club members.
