KKU Partners with Ministry of Public Health to Provide Free HPV Vaccination for 3,400 Female Students to Prevent Cervical Cancer

On 22 July 2025, the Primary Care Student Unit, Khon Kaen University, in collaboration with Srinagarind Hospital, organized an HPV (Human Papillomavirus) vaccination campaign for all undergraduate female students. The event was honored by Assoc. Prof. Pensri Jaroenwanit, Ph.D., Vice President for Student Affairs and Innovation Commercialization, Khon Kaen University, and Dr. Hirunwut Praekunatham, M.D., Director of the Office of Disease Prevention and Control Region 7, Khon Kaen, who attended the activity. A total of 3,400 female students received the vaccine at Meeting Room 3, 2nd Floor, Student Organization Activity Building, Khon Kaen University.

This initiative is part of the government’s policy under the HPV Vaccination Service Program for Female Students in Fiscal Year 2025, aiming to prevent cervical cancer. Khon Kaen University is among the 24 higher education institutions selected as pilot sites for the vaccination program.

Dr. Hirunwut Praekunatham explained: “The policy to expand HPV vaccination coverage to female university students aged 18–26 who have never been vaccinated builds on the Ministry of Public Health’s integrated cancer prevention strategy, which identifies cervical cancer as one of the five major cancers in 2024. HPV vaccination significantly increases immunity coverage against HPV and reduces the future risk of cervical cancer among Thai women. For 2025, the program targets three groups: girls aged 11–20 who have received the first dose, Grade 5 students under the national benefit scheme, and girls aged 11–20 who have never received the vaccine.”

Assoc. Prof. Pensri Jaroenwanit added:“Khon Kaen University prioritizes student health. Being selected as a pilot site for HPV vaccination is a vital opportunity to strengthen immunity among our female students. This aligns with the university’s strategic mission to contribute to society. The program will protect student health and raise awareness about cervical cancer prevention, benefiting the wider community in the long run.”

Ms. Pimolphan Tangkwutthivijit, a Social Development major in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, shared her experience:

“I learned about this program from a friend who shared the information. I came with three friends because prevention is better than cure. After the screening confirmed I hadn’t received the vaccine, I decided to get it today. I encourage everyone to join because you don’t want to regret it later.”

The vaccination campaign runs from 16–30 July 2025, 10:00 AM–3:00 PM, at Meeting Room 3, 2nd Floor, Student Organization Activity Building, Khon Kaen University. Vaccines include the 9-valent HPV vaccine for those who have never been vaccinated and a second dose of the 2-valent vaccine for those who have previously received the first dose.

The project is supported by Khon Kaen Provincial Public Health Office, in collaboration with Khon Kaen Hospital, Office of Disease Prevention and Control Region 7, the Department of Disease Control, Ministry of Public Health, and the Division of Student Development and Alumni Relations, Khon Kaen University.
