A new chapter in global fashion history unfolded at the “Isan Soul Proud” Fashion Show, where the charm of Northeastern Thai (Isan) identity met contemporary design and artificial intelligence (AI) for the first time ever. Held as part of the Isan Creative Festival 2025, from June 28 to July 6, the show featured top 10 designers from the region and marked the world’s first integration of AI into a live fashion runway.
In this groundbreaking event, human models shared the spotlight with AI-generated models, displayed through immersive virtual screens. AI technology was used to recreate elements of Isan culture, from textile patterns and costume art to soundscapes drawn from traditional Isan musical tones. This fusion elevated local handicrafts and performing arts to the global stage, making heritage come alive with a fresh digital perspective.
The project was a collaborative effort between the Computer Engineering Program, Faculty of Engineering and the Performing Arts Program, Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts, Khon Kaen University. The team was led by faculty advisors Prof. Dr. Wanida Kaen-akat and Asst. Prof. Dr. Thanatphon Kittikong, and included student developers from Computer Engineering: Mr. Parinya Chabunruang, Mr. Naphat Phadungkij, Mr. Kawin Phakhoktham, Mr. Phisit Srichamnart, Mr. Suphawut Nameuangrak, and Mr. Theerthawat Khamying. Performing Arts students involved were Ms. Nahathai Boonmuea, Ms. Natthanok Bandit, Mr. Phumipat Khumkhamhaeng, and Mr. Nhanawat Chanyim.
Additional cultural insights and academic support were provided by Asst. Prof. Dr. Kanyarat Kweiasen (Information Science, Khon Kaen University), Asst. Prof. Dr. Intira Prompan and Ms. Natnicha Maneepruk (Art Education, Chulalongkorn University), and Lect. Pachara Wongchaiwan (Phranakhon Si Ayutthaya Rajabhat University).
Prof. Dr. Wanida Kaen-akat, Associate Dean for Research, Innovation, and International Affairs at the Faculty of Engineering and Deputy Director of the Institute of Artificial Intelligence Engineering, commented:
“For the first time, we’re seeing AI step beyond the tech and classroom realms and into the world of art, culture, and fashion. The fact that AI can understand the identity of Isan textiles and translate them into contemporary artistic expressions on the runway proves that technology doesn’t replace art — it amplifies it for a new generation.”
This milestone event marks a bold move toward positioning Thai craft, art, and design industries on the global stage, while reinforcing the idea that Isan is not only a cultural root, but a source of fashion innovation for the future.
