Faculty of Science Hosts Intensive “Anatomy and Basic Chemistry” Workshops for Khon Kaen Wittayayon SMTE Students

On 24 May 2026, from 09:00 to 16:00 hrs, the Faculty of Science at Khon Kaen University actively driven its strategic initiative to establish lifelong learning spaces by welcoming teachers and students from Khon Kaen Wittayayon School for an intensive scientific laboratory training programme. Ms. Arisara Akkasorn, along with a team of four teachers, led a delegation of 70 Grade 10 students from the Science, Mathematics, Technology, and Environment (SMTE) special classroom project and the Premium Science project to undergo hands-on skill development in authentic university laboratories.

The training programme partitioned the students into two core academic disciplines to maximise experiential learning:

  • Department of Biology: Students participated in a laboratory workshop on “Vertebrate Anatomy,” focusing on the internal anatomical structures of poultry. The session was conducted at Laboratory SC3110 in Building Sc.03.

  • Department of Chemistry: Students engaged in a practical session titled “Basic Techniques for Chemistry Laboratories,” which emphasised the precise and correct utilisation of leading scientific instruments for weighing, volumetric measuring, and standard scientific calculations in compliance with international benchmarks. The training took place at Laboratories SC8522 and SC8608 in Building Sc.08.

Ms. Kawinthida Sompanya, a Grade 10 student representative, shared her enthusiasm regarding the experience, stating that she felt immensely excited to observe and learn about animal anatomy firsthand. She expressed appreciation for the faculty members who provided close supervision and continuous guidance throughout the workshop, noting that the experience delivered novel practical insights unavailable in regular classrooms and that she hoped the school would organise such activities more frequently.

Ms. Arisara Akkasorn, the supervising teacher, commented on the instructional atmosphere, observing that the students were highly energised by the off-campus laboratory environment, particularly as this was the first external practical training for this cohort of Grade 10 students. She noted that the students were fascinated by the modern instrumentation, which helped them conceptualise science as a tangible, ubiquitous tool rather than a mere textbook concept, while simultaneously instilling foundational skills that can be effectively applied to their school curriculum. She also encouraged other students to embrace out-of-classroom experiences to elevate their personal learning thresholds.

This outreach activity directly reflects the academic service mission of the Faculty of Science in addressing the developmental needs of the community and educational institutions. By providing secondary students access to sophisticated scientific apparatus and professional techniques, the Faculty stimulates analytical thinking and inspires future scientific pursuits. This operational alignment complies with Khon Kaen University’s Education Transformation strategy, which focuses on national advancement by sharing academic resources and expertise with the community to prepare the next generation of high-quality manpower in science and technology.
