KKU students design an AI face detector for use under Covid-19 to identify a person with face mask

It has been over 3 years now that people in the world have been facing the crisis from Corona virus 2019. Many sectors have to adjust themselves, while the circle of security guarding and police have had to modify their approach for catching law breakers or criminals, who are in the crowd and are wearing a mask. This is the gap preventing security officers and police to follow the criminals, or making it harder for them. A group of students from the College of Computing, Khon Kaen University, then carried out the Face Detection and Identification System Project. The students applied their AI knowledge in their project, which meets the trend and technological needs of the world.

Mr. Parit Jonghan, a student of the College of Computing, the leader of the Face Detection and Identification System Project and the awardee of the Tech4Good gold award (turning green project), as the Asian representative who entered the world AI competition, revealed that he conducted this project with 2 friends: Mr. Phumiphat Janbai and Mr. Pannatorn Phatai. They were inspired by the reflection from security officers of the difficulty in detecting criminals or law breakers during the Covid-19 pandemic, for the criminals always wear the masks and hide in the crowd. The AI used for detecting full face of criminals has become ineffective. Thus, Parit and his two friends carried out this project to identify the face of law breakers even though their full faces cannot be seen.

“AI can clearly identify the face of a criminal even though only half of the face is seen as the bottom half of the face is hidden under the mask. AI has been designed to figure out the full face and half face. This means that no matter if the law breaker or criminal is wearing or not wearing a mask, we can identify the face precisely. The result is safety of people’s life and assets. The system can be used for military, immigration police, regional police purposes. AI is of the security maintaining type, the AI model that I and my friends want it to be used for social benefits,” said the student leading the project.

The AI program of the College of Computing has been developed to meet with the needs for manpower than can work for the industrial sector and different organizations. The program prepares graduates with the special knowledge and competency in AI. The program thus answers the trend and needs for technology. It is vital for the country to grow in economy and industry. Now the vehicle industry, smart electronic industry, agriculture and biotechnology, including medicine or security all rely on AI in order to develop and change their products and technologies. This is the heart of the mechanism behind the national economic propulsion.
