KKU’s rank soars to the 70th in Top 200 Universities on YouTube 2019

KKU rank has risen up to the 70th according to the Top 200 Universities on YouTube 2019 YouTube University Ranking considered from over 7,000 universities all over the world

Asst. Prof. Dr. Denpong Soodphakdee, Vice President for Digital University Development of Khon Kaen University, revealed that uniRank was the institute providing information about educational directory consisting of recognized higher-education institutions. Its search tool and ranking arrangement had been widely accepted by over 13,600 universities and colleges from 200 countries. In the year f 2019, uniRank had ranked the popularity of each university in order of the information on YouTube and presented the list of 200 most popular universities. The objective of this ranking was to provide non-academic form of university league tables, but popularity – the number of subscribers on each university’s official channel on YouTube. It had been found that KKU had risen to the 70th of the world rank, and it had 33,565 subscribers in Khon Kaen University’s YouTube channel Thailand.

The selection criteria of Top 200 Universities on YouTube require that each university has to be chartered, licensed and/or accredited by the appropriate higher education-related organization in each country. The university also has to offer at least four-year undergraduate degrees (bachelor’s degrees) or postgraduate degrees (master’s or doctoral degrees) and deliver courses predominantly in a traditional, face-to-face, non-distance education format.

Asst. Prof. Dr. Denpong Soodphakdee continued, “YouTube, which is accessible on the internet, became the new way of learning in the digital age when knowledge is mostly provided in the form of videos because many people prefer watching to reading. At present, many universities have created their videos to show their activities, present their work, talk about news, and share materials regarding education. YouTube is very popular platform used for sharing videos. KKU has collaborated with YouTube for a long time. Five years ago we changed into YouTube Education Channel because we had subscribed and been allowed to update our channel as educational one having no advertisement. Anyway, our version has to create our own content. Photos, videos, and sounds from any other sources are prohibited on our approved official channel.”

Asst. Prof. Dr. Denpong added, “Among over 7,000 universities having their own YouTube channels, Khon Kaen University is determined and has engaged in YouTube channel for some time, so we have wide range of content. As a result, this attracts the great number of subscribers and led us to the 70th in the world rank which is very good. Normally, many universities, even KKU, publicize their academic content on YouTube channel but the number of viewers relatively low. However, we our official channel still has 33,565 subscribers. This indicates that our content is useful, and our YouTube channel has significant role in encouraging people’s learning by interesting content from different offices in KKU. Providing good content to people is still challenging.”

“When talking about how we can move forward digitally, there are many factors, like organizational structure, strategy, human resource, and culture in organization. However, KKU is urgently developed the organization with more digital equipment and more efficient process. We can call it “Work Digital Process Automation.” Moreover, we need to educate people about digital literacy. Users need be able to protect their personal detail and information of their organization. Besides security, users need to be aware of their social media post and their rights to maintain the good objectives of the university.”

“Digital literacy still has quite a big gap to improve to make people understand how to utilize these things for easier work. Independent learning that requires students to collect credits in order to obtain degree or develop their life skill is educational management. The last thing that we should be concerned is encouraging entrepreneur in the digital age or digital industry age. The current trend involves with 3 main aspects – IOT, AI, and block chain. If these 3 aspects can work together, they may offer the great opportunity to young generation or other people who see the way to become new entrepreneurs,” Asst. Prof. Dr. Denpong said.
