Khon Kaen University is set to transform the cultural landscape of Thailand’s Isan region with the launch of the Isan Film Archive, a bold initiative aimed at harnessing the power of local culture to drive economic growth. This ambitious project, spearheaded by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Niyom Wongpongkham, Vice President for Arts, Culture, and Creative Economy, seeks to redefine Isan’s image from a land of hardship to a vibrant hub of creativity and innovation
Revitalizing Isan: From Past Legends to Future Tense
Historically perceived as a region of extreme heat and poverty, Isan is now emerging as a dynamic force capable of shaping the future. Under the leadership of Dr. Narongchai Akrasanee, President of the University Council, Khon Kaen University is committed to transforming Isan into a beacon of the Creative Economy. The university has allocated funds to renovate the second floor of its Art and Culture Center into the Isan Film Archive, a center dedicated to nurturing sustainable cultural and economic growth.
A Hub for Marketable Art and Film Innovation
For over two decades, Khon Kaen University has been at the forefront of Thailand’s film industry, fostering talent and creativity among students and professionals alike. The Isan Film Archive will serve as a pivotal platform for aspiring filmmakers, offering over 500 film plots for development. In the coming months, the archive will host pitching sessions, connecting scriptwriters with investors to bring innovative film ideas to life.
“The Film Archive will showcase the rich history of Isan cinema, including the legendary actor Sombat Metanee, who holds the Guinness World Record for the most films acted in,” said Dr. Niyom Wongpongkham. “We are establishing an Academy to teach all aspects of filmmaking, from pre-production to post-production, and creating a 24-hour film viewing area. This initiative will position Khon Kaen as the epicenter of Thai cinema, with aspirations to become a global film city.”
Bridging Culture and Commerce
Khon Kaen University aims to bridge the gap between creativity and commerce by transforming the Isan Film Archive and Art Gallery into vibrant marketplaces for art. By fostering trust between buyers and sellers, the university seeks to create new commercial opportunities and elevate Isan’s cultural heritage.
“Khon Kaen University acts as a trusted intermediary, ensuring that all transactions are legitimate and artists can confidently showcase their work,” Dr. Niyom explained. “We will officially launch the works of 40 Isan artists this December, with a rigorous selection process to ensure the highest standards.”
Preserving Heritage for Future Generations
“We must adapt our cultural heritage to resonate with contemporary audiences,” Dr. Niyom emphasized. “Khon Kaen University is dedicated to discovering and revitalizing the value of our traditions, ensuring they thrive with dignity and sustainability. Isan’s cultural legacy will endure and flourish.”
With this groundbreaking initiative, Khon Kaen University is not only preserving Isan’s rich cultural roots but also paving the way for a future where tradition and innovation coexist harmoniously.
