KKU calls out staff and students to carry out the University forestation activity that will add oxygen and lessen global warming

Tuesday June 25, 2024 – the Physical and Environmental Section of Khon Kaen University carried out the project to develop forest park (forestation). The event was honored to have Assoc. Prof. Charnchai Panthongviriyakul, M.D., Acting President of the University to give the opening speech. Assoc. Prof. Chupong Thongkhamsamut, Ph.D., Acting Vice President for Physical and Environmental Section delivered the reporting speech. The event took place at Mo Din Daeng Village, at the University’s fence on Mo Din Daeng Gate side.

Assoc. Prof. Charnchai Panthongviriyakul, M.D., Acting President of Khon Kaen University mentioned in his opening speech that Khon Kaen University has continuously implemented the strategy in making the University a ‘Great Place to Live’ and building a ‘Green Society’. The University sees the importance in preserving and conserving the green space, especially caring of the former trees and the trees necessary to conserve, under the mission to build the University Forest that will lessen carbon dioxide, increase oxygen to the urban area, and lessen global warming. The Division of Utility and Environment has prepared over 2,000 seedlings including Yangna, teak, Kalaphruek, Koon, for everyone to plant and return the green area condition to Mo Din Daeng Village and the forest park of Medical Center 7 Resident (opposite Agricultural Technology Park). This is something everyone can do as the common owner of the area. In the future, Khon Kaen University has a plan and policy to return the forest around the campus to the former forest, which is the source of bio-diversity, and the administration of forest ecology on campus will be sustainably done.

Assoc. Prof. Chupong Thongkhamsamut, Ph.D., Acting Vice President for Physical and Environmental Section said that because the condition of the former forest area on KKU campus deteriorated due to natural factors such as pests, weeds and area utilization, the Physical and Environmental Division therefore became aware of the sustainable management of the forest area and restoration of the ecological system. One objective is to increase the potentiality in retaining carbon dioxide and atmospheric dusts. The “Forest Park Development Project” has therefore been set up. If there is a tree shade, the temperature under the tree can be reduced at 7 degrees at once with no use of electricity. The activity today corresponded to the Khon Kaen University Strategic Plans 2024-2027 and the 7th Strategy: Building the University a ‘Great Place to Live’, Objective 1: Sustainable Environmental Conservation and Protection.

Mr. Narawit Tengphakwaen, a 3rd year student majoring in environment, Faculty of Sciences, said, “The world temperature increased 2 degrees permanently. That means the world will not return to have the former temperature. The result is that everyone in the world will find it harder to live. Industrial factories have to turn on air conditioners at higher speed, which consumes more power. Vehicles use more air-conditioner and more fuel, resulting in more pollutants. People may think this is beyond their capacity, but the issues about pollution, trees, air, and environment are close to and have impact on us in one way or another. Therefore, planting trees will effectively help lessening the temperature. Planting trees today will make the world pleasant to live for our children.”
