KKU launches“AI for Hip Fracture Detection” – a medical innovation using an X-ray image – a true novice doctor assistant

Real Thai Medicine Transform! Faculties of Medicine and Engineering, Khon Kaen University, joined in inventing a medical innovation that assists detection of hip fracture from an X-ray image.

Thursday April 11, 2024 – Khon Kaen University held a press conference to report on a medical innovation success that benefits disease diagnosis. This is the “AI for Hip Fracture Detection from an X-ray image”, the invention that is the outcome of the collaboration between researchers of the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Engineering, Khon Kaen University. Assoc. Prof. Charnchai Panthongviriyakul, M.D., President of Khon Kaen University and Assoc. Prof. Pattarapong Makornwes, M.D., Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, as the user of the innovation, led the team of KKU administrators to report the news to the press. The event took place at Sarasin Room, 2nd Floor, Sirikunakorn Building, Khon Kaen University, with a number of distinguished guests attending to congratulate the inventors.

Assoc. Prof. Charnchai Panthongviriyakul, M.D., President of Khon Kaen University, said “Khon Kaen University is determined to support and deploy quality research works and innovations so that they are commercially and socially useful. This innovation is the success in development of Healthcare AI, which is important for the country. The “AI for Hip Fracture Detection from an X-ray image” can help doctors efficiently, accurately, and rapidly diagnose hip fracture and hence can fast transfer the patient to the right tract according to the service standard.

Khon Kaen University is proud of the research teams from the Faculty of Medicine led by Asst. Prof. Parin Tawinprai, M.D., and from the Faculty of Engineering, led by Assoc. Prof. Puripong Sutthisopapan, who have joined in developing this piece of AI in health care with dedication, knowledge and expertise. The invention will be an important part in the national development.”

Assoc. Prof. Pattarapong Makornwes, M.D., Dean of the Faculty of Medicine added, “Faculty of Medicine has piloted the introduction and application of AI innovation in Srinagarind Hospital whenever there is doubt that a patient has developed hip fracture. We can now use this AI to analyze the X-ray image immediately, and so can assist doctors to work more efficiently and at the same time helps all patients to receive the best possible treatment.”

Doctor Nattapon Tawinprai said, “From the rate of errors in diagnoses all over the world of 15-30%, if the patient does not receive treatment, physical deformation, disability and death may result. This AI is accurate, about 95% or equal to a specialist in orthopedics. It functions just like a consultant to doctors in general. We have used this AI at Srinagarind Hospital and posted it on the Website for the network hospitals. In this regard, we have received good acceptance, both in terms of diagnosis and increase of doctors’ confidence.”

Asst. Prof. Parin Tawinprai added, “Thanks to Khon Kaen University, doctors and those who have taken part in the development, and not least, the patients who received treatment at Srinagarind Hospital, for the “AI for Hip Fracture Detection from an X-ray image” is the innovation created from the patients’ data. The research teams of the Faculties of Medicine and Engineering have integrated the expertise in a cross-disciplinary style and so it can be considered the success of KKU researchers, which we are ready to transfer it for benefits of the country. We are now still determined to develop innovations and medical technologies for benefits in diagnoses of other diseases.”

The “AI for Hip Fracture Detection from an X-ray image” is the beginning in the development of innovations and technologies for upgrading the health care system for all age levels. Khon Kaen University is also determined to continuously develop medical innovations and technologies that will benefit the Northeast communities and the country.

Assoc. Prof. Puripong Sutthisopapan, from Faculty of Engineering, revealed, “In terms of engineering, we brought the data obtained from the doctor team to computerize and adjust by means of different processes until finally we got the AI model that can accurately detect hip fracture. Now, the AI is ready to be used and we have installed it in the hospital system and have developed the web page that will help doctors to diagnose hip fracture more quickly and precisely.”

AI does not replace doctors, but assists doctor to work more efficiently.
