Wednesday January 10, 2024, 10:00 a.m. at Santi Maitree Building, House of the Government, Bangkok – Administrators, teachers, officers and students of Khon Kaen University Demonstration School, Secondary Section (Faculty of Education) went to congratulate Master Peerawit Laoraowirote, a 7th grader of the school on the occasion of his being selected as the outstanding youth who has brought academic reputation to his home country. All then made a courtesy call to the Prime Minister, while Peerawit was awarded the trophy, and listened to the Prime Minister’s address.
Master Peerawit Laoraowirote, or Nong Pun Pun, related that he had enjoyed Mathematics since Grade 3. After class, he would practice doing the mathematics problems and enjoyed that. From then on, he set the goal for himself to enter a competition. And there goes, “Where there is a will, there is a way”, for he was awarded medals both at the national and international levels. This encourages him even more in this direction.
“I’m glad and proud, and feel that what I learned and practices is not a waste. My next target is Camp 2, International Science Olympiads (ISO), which I will try my best. For my friends, I hope you pay attention at school, allocate your time well. I myself allocate half an hour to practice doing mathematics problems before I go to school, pay attention in class, return home to do homework and practiced mathematics a little more. The important thing you should not forget is to find time for relaxation so that you are not stressed. My good wish for everyone.”
Tanaporn Laoraowirote, Peerawit’s parent, said that when he was young, Pun Pun was like other kids who learned only at school and did other activities. Then he had a chance to take a test under the Science and Mathematics Genius Development Project, 2019 when he was in his third grade. He was awarded the gold medal from Mathematics. The parents then realized that the child was competent and liked this subject, and so supported him all along.
“I’m pleased with his success, but I do not force him. On the contrary, I support him and warn him not to work too hard. I also help him to allocate time in his life equally. Before now, he was awarded a gold medal at an International Academic Competition, the second round. He was selected as a Thai student representative to join the international competition in 2023 and received a silver medal for the individual category and a bronze medal in the team category from the Po Leung Kuk Primary Mathematics World Contest (PMWC 2023). From these awards, he has been selected as an outstanding youth who brings reputation to the country in 2024.”
Ajarn Mongkhon Prasertsung, a teacher of the Mathematics subject group said that the group has arranged activities for students to sharpen their mathematics skills through different games for the students to relax after classes. Peerawit is one member of the club. He is outstanding in the mathematics class with a firm subject basis and is skillful in solving mathematics problems that are beyond his own level. The school sees the potentiality and is prepared to support the student to join more competitions, both at the national and international levels.
In the selection of 2024, 1,220 school students passed the criteria from 17 institutions, 604 being selected as outstanding youths, 279 as youths as individuals who have brought reputation to the country, and 337 students in teams who have brought reputation to the country.
