Institute for Research and Development of Teaching Profession, KKU, holds an event to strengthen teachers and execute school development plans

Tuesday February 28, 2023 at 13:00 p.m. – The Institute for Research and Development of Teaching Profession, Khon Kaen University and the National Institute for School Teachers and Staff Development (NITS), Japan, held the opening ceremony for the First Phase of “School Improvement Plan” at the Institute, KKU.

The Institute for Research and Development of Teaching Profession for ASEAN, Khon Kaen University cooperated with the National Institute for School Teachers and Staff Development (NITS). Japan and the National Institute for Development of Teachers Faculty Staff and Educational Personnel (NIDTEP) to carry out a project for developing the competency of education professionals. The event of 2023, Phase 1 was on the model for developing knowledge and plans for school improvement (School Improvement Plan.” The event was organized both online and by Zoom Meeting. The opening ceremony was held on February 28, 2023 at 13:00 p.m. at the Institute for Research and Development of Teaching Profession, Khon Kaen University. Prof. Monchai Duangchinda, Ph.D., Vice President for Research and Graduate Study of Khon Kaen University delivered the opening speech, while Assoc. Prof. Maitree Inprasitha, Ph.D., Vice President for Education and Academic Service, and Acting Director of the Institute for Research and Development of Teaching Profession for ASEAN, KKU, delivered the reporting speech. Attending as distinguished guests were the General Secretary of Thailand Teacher Council, Deputy General Secretary of the Teacher Council, Project Advisor, Mr. Masahiro Oji, Vice President of National Institute for School Teachers and Staff Development (NITS), Japan; Assoc. Prof. Narin Jansri, Ph.D., Dean of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Science; Assoc. Prof. Orathai Pia-ura, Ph.D., Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences; and 60 deputy administrators of schools, teachers, teacher supervisors from 20 schools from all over the country who were selected for the Project.

After the opening ceremony, there was a special talk on “School Improvement Plan” by Assoc. Prof. Maitree Inprasitha, Ph.D., Vice President for Education and Academic Service, and Acting Director of the Institute for Research and Development of Teaching Profession for ASEAN, KKU. The program that followed was the learning and sharing of school administration experiences using the TLSOA innovation, which was run by teacher teams for Kajornkiatpattana School and Ban Ma-ue School and moderated by Ajarn Ak Inprasitha, an expert in development of teaching profession and educators from the Institute for Research and Development of Teaching Profession for ASEAN. The event ended with the guidelines for participants of the 16th National Open Class by Asst. Prof. Narumon Changsri, Ph.D., Director of the Mathematics Education Research Center and Assistant Director for Innovation Research and Development of the Institute.

Prof. Monchai Duangchinda, Ph.D., Vice President for Research and Graduate Study of Khon Kaen University explained that this project is an important project under the policy of Khon Kaen University in academic service based on technologies and innovations for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Project implementation has been planned for 5 phases. Trainees were expected to learn together and understand the context of the use of innovations to strengthen education professionals. The training was on the Lesson Study and the Open Approach, which are the main innovation of the Institute that have been deployed for over 20 years now. Trainees learned from the study cases and development processes of Japan and had a chance for learning and sharing with other participants and speakers from both Thailand and Japan. The organizations that contributed in the activities are the Office of the General Secretary of the Teacher Council, the Institute for Development of Teachers and Educators and the National Institute for School Teachers and Staff Development (NITS), Japan. The event is expected to lead Khon Kaen University towards internationalization and would enable leaping progress of KKU in instruction, research and academic services.

Assoc. Prof. Maitree Inprasitha, Ph.D., Vice President for Education and Academic Service, and Acting Director of the Institute for Research and Development of Teaching Profession for ASEAN, KKU, reported that from the plans for continuous development, the 4 parties have achieved the mission of project deployment in the 3 years of the piloting phase, from 2018-2020. There were 119 trainees from 3 groups completing the training. According to the plan, there were 4 phases. The first was the introduction of the Institute for Research and Development of Teaching Profession for ASEAN, KKU, about the use of innovation for strengthening the education professionals. Phase 2 at NITS was the Lesson Study and Instructional Development in Japan. Phase 3 was application in schools and Phase 4 was the following up and evaluation by the Institute for Development of Teachers and Educators. During the last phase, trainees presented and shared their outcomes of the use of the Lesson Study and Open Approach. There were 60 administrators of schools and supervisors passing the selection to attend the 4th Phase from 20 schools all over the country.

For the training project this time, the objectives were to strengthen the competency on leadership, research and sustainable education development of the education professionals and to build a network for development of teaching professions among Thai and Japanese educational institutions. Policies are to be linked with real practicum based on the innovations of the Lesson Study, promotion of quality classroom management and leadership. Emphasis was on collaboration of research of those in the profession and those who are involved in teaching using the real classroom situation, which had been planned systematically and for a long term so that those involved would develop themselves, their instruction, and the learning of learners. The next activity of the Open Class is scheduled for March 18, 2023 at the Institute for Research and Development of Teaching Profession and for March 19, 2023 in the online format.
