Thursday January 13, 2021 at 13:30 – 14.10 p.m. – The Innovation and Enterprise Section by the Center for Technology and Innovation Administration of Khon Kaen University held an MOU signing ceremony to solve lumpy skin disease in the Northeast between Khon Kaen University and Livestock Department. Signing on Khon Kaen part were Assoc. Prof. Charnchai Panthongviriyakul, M.D., President of Khon Kaen University; Prof. Bundit Tengcharoensakul, Ph.D., Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine; and Assoc. Prof. Darunee Chotisayangkoon, Ph.D., Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture. For the Livestock Department, signing representatives included Dr. Bunyakrit Pinprasong, D.V.M., representing the Director of the Department; Mr. Wiwat Chaicha-um, Director of Livestock Development and Promotion Division; Dr. Weerapong Tanapongtham, D.V.M., an expert in human-animal contagious disease control (rabies). This MOU signing ceremony was done by Zoom Meeting program.
The MOU between Khon Kaen University and Livestock Department has as its objective for collaborating the work in the Northeast on solution of lumpy skin disease. The Department of Livestock will support in terms of manpower and facilitate the work in the area to solve the lumpy skin disease problem. Khon Kaen University will be transferring technology and knowledge to the Department and the local administrative organizations.
Assoc. Prof. Charnchai Panthongviriyakul, M.D., President of Khon Kaen University said that Khon Kaen University sees the importance of knowledge, technology and innovation development for social and commercial uses, especially the work for the society, devotion for the community according to the value of the University for the wellbeing of people in the Northeast.
“From the spread of lumpy skin disease in 2020 until now, Khon Kaen University sees the trouble of farmers who raise cattle in the Northeast. We have worked with Department of Livestock and local administrative organizations who went to assist the farmers by providing treatment, care, and prevention method against lumpy skin disease. The collaborative work has led to the signing of MOU for concrete solution of the problem in the Northeast today.”
Khon Kaen University, under this MOU, will take responsibility in transferring knowledge and technology on the treatment, care, and solution of lumpy skin disease to officers of the Livestock Department and local administrative organizations as well as farmers. Lecturers from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and from Department of Husbandry, Faculty of Agriculture, have high expertise and knowledge in treatment and prevention of diseases in livestock and in facing the problem of lumpy skin disease in the Northeast. The Department of Livestock will be supporting in terms of manpower and facilitating the work on sites related to the solution of lumpy skin, conducting surveillance, and controlling diseases in animals.
“I hope that the collaboration will benefit the livestock farmers in the Northeast and will improve the economy of the farmers, helping them to lead their lives and occupation happily into the long future,” said the President of Khon Kaen University.
Dr. Bunyakrit Pinprasong, D.V.M., representing the Director of the Department said, “Livestock Department is happy and proud to be able to sign an MOU with Khon Kaen University to solve the problem in the Northeast on lumpy skin disease in cattle. The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and the Department of Husbandry of the Faculty of Agriculture are full of experiences and expertise and they will be the important institutes to help solve this problem in the Northeast.”
“Lumpy skin disease is a newly emerged disease of livestock in Thailand, found in dairy and beef cattle. The disease is widespread these days and brings severe impact on the livestock sector, damage on economy and the farmers who raise dairy and beef cattle as well as buffalos. The areas in the Northeast are found reporting about the pandemic. The Department of Livestock recently joined with relevant organizations to solve the problem, and Khon Kaen University was one of those,”
“Khon Kaen University has knowledgeable academic staff who have expertise on lumpy skin disease and therefore are ready to transfer the knowledge and technology to officers of Livestock Department and officers of the local administrative organizations. Livestock Department has the responsibility to conduct surveillance, prevent and control diseases in animals. It is a department responsible for the spread of animal diseases in Thailand including lumpy skin disease. Therefore, the department is happy and also confident to support Khon Kaen University in solving the problem of lumpy skin disease in the Northeast. We will support in terms of personnel and will help facilitating the operations in various missions so that the control and prevention of the disease will be efficient and sustainable,” Dr. Bunyakrit Pinprasong said.
The MOU will be effective for 3 years from January 13, 2022 until January 12, 2025.
