KKU Architecture holds the 8th National Conference on Urban and Regional Planning Academic Symposium or the Urban Challenge for New Normal

Faculty of Architecture, KKU joins the 8 institutional network to hold the 8th National Conference on Urban and Regional Planning Academic Symposium both online and onsite at the Center for Teaching and Learning Innovations, Khon Kaen University.

The Urban and Regional Planning Program of Faculty of Architecture, Khon Kaen University is ready for the 8th National Conference on Urban and Regional Planning Academic Symposium, 2020/2021, which is scheduled on July 23, 2021.

Asst. Prof. Krittaphat Thapalabut, Ph.D., explained about the conference, “The 8 institution network including Khon Kaen University, Chulalongkorn University, Thammasat University, King Mongkut University of Technology Lad Krabang, Silapakorn University, Mahasarakham University, Mae Jo University, and the Thai Urban Planning Council have joined in organizing the conference under the name URPAS for 8 years now. The 8 institutions take turn to host this conference, which is on national urban and regional planning. As 2021 is the 33rd anniversary of the Faculty of Architecture, the Urban and Regional Planning Program therefore hosts the conference this year.”

The theme of this conference, Urban Challenge for New Normal, emerged from the challenge in urban planning that results from the spread of Covid-19 in Thailand, which, as we all know, evidently affects the academic, occupational, and urban development in many dimensions such as, traveling, residents, tourism, and urban environment. Urban people need to adjust their ways of living to be able to undergo the pandemic. The network institutions therefore decided to hold the 8th National Conference on Urban and Regional Planning Academic Symposium, 2020/2021 this year. The conference is planned to take place at the Center for Teaching and Learning Innovations of Khon Kaen University, and also online. The conference is aimed to show our leading role in urban development and to have a stage for academics and scholars in urban and regional planning to present their knowledge, ideas, and approaches that will effectively meet with the challenge.

Assoc. Prof. Panit Phuchinda, Ph.D., President of Thai Urban Planning Council honors the conference by being the key speaker on the topic of “City after Covid”. There will be 17 articles presented by different academics in the fields, in 3 sub-themes as follows:

  • 5 articles on Urban Development in the New Normal
  • 6 articles on Urban Design, Transportation and Houses in the New Normal
  • 6 articles on Ecology and Urban Conservation in the New Normal

The network institutions of the above universities include the Urban and Regional Planning Program, Faculty of Architecture, Khon Kaen University; Department of Urban and Planning, Faculty of Architecture, Chulalongkorn University; Department of Urban Planning, Faculty of Architecture and Urban Planning, Thammasat University; Department of Architecture and Architectural Planning and Urban Planning, King Mongkut University of Technology Lad Krabang; Department of Design and Urban Community Planning, Faculty of Architecture, Silapakorn University; Faculty of Archiecture, Urban Design, and Creative Arts, Mahasarakham University; Department of Urban Planning and Environment, Faculty of Architecture, Mae Jo University, and the Thai Urban Planning Council. The conference has been organized for the 8th time this year. The main purpose is for urban and regional planning that has impact on cities and benefits urban people. Another objective is to disseminate knowledge in regional and urban planning that can be extended in solving problems in the cities as well as strengthening the academic collaboration in urban development in the future.
